Hey!
I’m not sure if it’s common for VTubers to have a blog, but I’ve made one anyway. Why?
Setting up a blog has been a plan of mine for a very long time, however, like many public facing projects of mine, it stalled as I awaited at least some form of brand consistency (I’m calling it brand consistency because ‘I don’t like people knowing what my face looks like’ apparently ‘isn’t professional’). However, now that I have manifested in the form of a retro 3D fox girl, it seems like a good time to start!
As many of you know, I am a full time game designer, or as full time as this terrifyingly unstable industry lets me. The main reason why I love being a designer, what made me start on this journey and why I keep throwing my CV at every company who let me, is because of the unique confluence of subjects that the role requires you to understand; art and philosophy.
I love sharing my thoughts and findings that I think has helped me become a better designer, a better artist or, if I’m feeling particularly pretentious, a better person. It’s one of the reasons why I wanted to make videos in the first place, but I think it’s uncontentious to say that making videos is hard. This love feeds into my work in games too, but I think there’s still space to explain my reasoning, to share my thoughts and how that develops into my career. This is where this blog comes in.
I wish for this blog to be a space for my thoughts of subjects revolving around art and how people interface with art. Not just games either, you’ll find that I immerse myself in a lot more mediums than games (and, if you’re also a games designer, you should too).
As a simple guide to what may be discussed here, looking at the list of topics I want to discuss, I’ll be talking about: What’s helped me design games better, what’s helped me become more media literate, my thoughts on some games and other media, as well as dissecting my understanding of how fandoms or groups of people online have interfaced with media.
Be forewarned though, this blog will contain opinions. They may not be very well researched opinions (though I will do my best to assure they aren’t built upon outright lies), they may be opinions I change my mind on later on, and they may also be opinions you disagree with. This is all fine, I don’t wish for this space to be held up to journalistic scrutiny. These are the matters that I feel compelled to take the time to mould into form, from disparate thoughts in my head into words on a screen, for little interest to anyone but my own.
And, who knows, maybe some of the subjects I discuss here will find themselves cleaned up and properly researched in a future video! Consider it a sneak peek into what has captivated me at any given time, I hope that interests you.
I should also point out that, as shown by the dumb meme I threw together at the top of this post, some of my writings here will steer a little bit away from the fun, light-hearted tone in my videos and streams. This is because of a position I’ve found to be true throughout my time engaging in art: Although we do not need to approach it as such all the time, all art is political, whether it explicitly intends to be or not. As an independently thinking audience, we can prescribe some form of political thought onto a piece of art that the author did not intend, or did not wish to be given. This is a good place to start as any for much of the matter that will be discussed in this blog, and as such I may delve deep into a piece of work and how it interfaces with community politics.
(I will also talk about silly things too, don’t worry.)
On that matter, any sensitive subject matter discussed in a post will be mentioned in a disclaimer at the top. Be sure to give them a read, and don’t worry if you need to sit one out, I don’t mind.
So that’s what this blog is for! There probably won’t be much in the way of personal updates, you can see my Twitter and BlueSky for those, but if you are interested in games, games design, fandom, or like to imagine a nerdy fox girl sitting at her messy desk saying all of this aloud in a nasal-y south-western accent, I hope you stick around!
Talk to you soon,
Ogyon
